The Federal Court of Appeal has broad jurisdiction to hear and determine applications for judicial review of federal tribunal decisions and appeals concerning immigration, citizenship, admiralty, customs, intellectual property, tax, labour relations, transportation, communications, parole and penitentiary matters, and some limited criminal matters. Unfortunately, many low-income British Columbians navigate through the complex judicial review and appeal processes while unrepresented. Through the Federal Court of Appeal Program, roster lawyers provide assistance and representation to clients in such matters as drafting of court documents (e.g. Notice of Appeal, appeal book), researching and preparing factums, and presenting legal arguments at hearings. For cases of full representation that relate specifically to poverty law issues, Pro Bono Law of BC offers coverage of disbursements incurred throughout the litigation process (coverage provided by a grant from the Law Foundation of British Columbia). Angus M. Gunn, Jr., of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, is the Program Coordinator for the Federal Court of Appeal Program. He screens each client, assesses each request for pro bono assistance, connects clients with lawyers, and serves as the primary program contact for roster lawyers. PROGRAM DOCUMENTS |
