The judicial review of administrative decisions by public officials is fundamental to the rule of law.  Unfortunately, many low-income British Columbians do not possess the resources or knowledge required to bring meritorious applications for judicial review.  This is particularly true for decisions made under the Residential Tenancy Act, the Employment and Assistance Act, the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act and the Workers Compensation Act.  Too often, in decisions made under these statutes, an error of law will threaten an individual’s livelihood or survival.

Through the Judicial Review Program, roster lawyers provide assistance and representation to clients in such matters as drafting of court documents (e.g. petition, affidavits), researching and preparing written submissions, preparing chambers records and presenting legal arguments in court.  For cases of full representation, Pro Bono Law of BC offers coverage of disbursements incurred throughout the litigation process (coverage provided by a grant from the Law Foundation of British Columbia).

Angus M. Gunn, Jr., of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, is the Program Coordinator for the Judicial Review Program.  He screens each client, assesses each request for pro bono assistance, connects clients with lawyers, and serves as the primary program contact for roster lawyers.
